Bob Bailey excelled as both an athlete and coach at Bellevue High School.
After participating in football and track for three years, the 1958 graduate returned to his alma mater as head coach in both wrestling and golf.
Bob Bailey was a standout on the gridiron for the Redmen. As a junior, he was first team Northern Ohio League as an offensive tackle and he came back as a senior to make first team all-NOL offensive and defensive tackle.
When he returned to his alma mater, he coached the high school wrestling team from 1964-1978.
During that time, the Redmen posted a 108-42 dual meet record and had numerous district and state qualifiers including the school’s first state champion in Don Didion during the 1970-71 season.
He guided the Redmen to two NOL championships and also started up the Bellevue Invitational Wrestling Tournament which now carries his name, being renamed the Robert Bailey Invitational in 2002.
After retiring from the high school scene, he came back to coach the junior high school wrestling program for eight years and was also a wrestling official for 15 years. He was one of the founding members of the South Shore Wrestling Officials Association (SSWOA).
He also coached the high school golf team for 13 years and also notched over 100 wins during that time including six NOL championships and he took two teams to the state tournament where they placed fifth and sixth.
He also had one individual at the state tournament in Brian Schubert.
Bailey also started up the Bellevue Invitational Tournament.
During his prep days, he was in the National Honor Society, Thespians, Quill and Scroll, intramurals, choir, plays, Dial staff and Hi-Y.
