2012 Big Red Service Award
Joe Brugnone & Pat "Mums" Holzwart
Joe Brugnone & Pat "Mums" Holzwart
The Big Red Service Award is being presented for the 8th consecutive year after being established by the Hall of Fame Committee in 2005. The award was established to honor a person, group, organization, or business that has gone beyond the call of duty to assist the Bellevue Redmen Athletic Department, and/or the Bellevue Redmen Athletic Booster Club. The 2012 Big Red Service Award Recipients are Mr. Joseph Brugnone and Mrs. Patricia “Mums” Holzwart.
Joe was born in Bellevue, Ohio in 1939. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1957. He completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1961 at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio. Joe was hired by the Bellevue City Schools in the fall of 1961 to teach Industrial Arts at Bellevue High School.
Joe soon learned that he would also be helping the Athletic Department as well in the capacity of repairman for both the football and basketball scoreboards. The athletic director depended on Joe to make sure the scoreboard was working properly before each game. Most of the time any problems were simple enough for Joe to handle but on occasion a call needed to be made to the scoreboard company. There he would seek advice from an electrical engineer. His worst enemy was the weather. A storm could easily short out an electrical component.
By the late 60’s BAF Stadium was constructed and the Redmen had a new football home. This meant a new scoreboard. Technology was changing and this meant Joe had more learning to do. Instead of changing a simple electrical component, a new circuit board was used to fix a problem. Joe also assisted in many other areas within the athletic department over the years. As well as fixing any scoreboard problems in his early days, Joe also ran the scoreboard controls at football games, and sold and took tickets at basketball, wrestling, and track events for well over 35 years. His partner for many of those ticket days, especially at basketball games was friend Pat Holzwart.
Joe retired from teaching in 2001 and still resides in Bellevue. His educational career spanned 40 years teaching such courses as metal shop, blueprint reading, shop math, basic electricity, drafting, engineering drawing, architectural drafting, driver education, and sociology. He also designed the flag of Bellevue in 1995. After Joe’s retirement he continued to assist the Athletic Department until 2011. The most memorable athletic working days were working with Pat Holzwart at many, many basketball nights and years. He also loved being one of the “Boys in the Box” at the top of BAF Stadium on Football Friday Nights.
Pat “Mums” Holzwart came to America in 1967 from Huntingdonshire, Englund in 1967. Pat then arrived at Bellevue High School in 1974 as a library aide. Pat and her husband Roger had found a home in Bellevue and Pat also had found a home at Bellevue High School. She spent the next 34 years at Bellevue High School helping students as a library and study hall aide. Her caring and supportive nature allowed her to direct and assist many, many students that walked the halls of Bellevue High School. Her talents were also shared in many extra-curricular activities as she never hesitated to get involved in the high school culture. She is an honorary member of the Drama Club, FCCLA, and Future Farmers of America, and she gave many lectures on English life and culture to classes throughout her career. She also helped chaperone many field trips involving the Spanish and Art Departments. Pat was the kind of person that came to most high school events and offered a helping hand.
Pat also supported the athletic department, kids, and coaches very much throughout her career at Bellevue High School. It was a big part of her life and career. She always wore Red & White with pride, and was always encouraging with the athletes and coaches during her time with them. She knitted red & white scarves for the basketball teams in the 1980’s, and interviewed coaches Shine, Adams, DeLuca, and Rich for the local radio station also in the 1980’s. Pat also assisted with Athletic Directors Duane Warns, Sam Schubert, John Rich, and Brian Schubert by selling and taking tickets at football, basketball, wrestling, and track events. Pat and her collegue and friend Joe Brugnone were mainstays at the back hallway ticket gate during boys basketball games for over 20 years.
Pat retired in June of 2008 after 34 years of service to the Bellevue City School District. Pat and her husband Roger still reside in Bellevue and are parents of two children, Bradley and Suzanne. They have five grandchildren, Danielle, Ashley, Aaron, Madison, and Alicia.
It a honor to give the 2012 “Big Red” Service Award to both Joe Brugnone and Pat Holzwart for their outstanding service to Bellevue High School and the Bellevue Athletic Department. They both have been great examples of service and assistance to our kids, teachers, and coaches during their educational careers.
