2019 Big Red Service Award
Bellevue High School FCCLA
Bellevue High School FCCLA

The “Big Red” Service Award is being presented for the 15th consecutive year after being established by the Hall of Fame Committee in 2005. The Award was established to honor a person, group, organization, or business that has gone beyond the call of duty to assist the Bellevue Redmen Athletic Department, Coaches, and/or the Bellevue Redmen Athletic Booster Club.
This year the Hall of Fame Committee is proud to recognize Bellevue High School newly retired teacher Kim Root, and her Bellevue High School FCCLA (Family, Career, Community Leaders of America) Department as the 2019 “Big Red” Service Award recipients.
Kim Root graduated from Bellevue High School in 1977 and returned to Bellevue to teach 34 years out of her 35 year educational career. This past school year she retired from Bellevue High School and the education profession. She left her mark at Bellevue High School as one of our best teachers, touching the lives of many of our Bellevue youth. Over her career, besides teaching in the Family and Consumer Sciences Department, Kim developed and led three student leadership groups at Bellevue High School. Friends of Rachel Club (FOR), Teen Leadership Corp (TLC), and Family Career, Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). They were developed and/or strengthened solely because of her leadership. Kim has been a great example for our students in many ways, but she has truly shown her students what it means to give back and serve her community. The service projects that Kim led and engaged her students in throughout her career are numerous. Habitat for Humanity and the Giving Tree Program are just two examples of her community involvement. Students in her classes have assisted Habitat for Humanity in preparing and building home structures for families. In 2014 she took over the Giving Tree Project which assists families at Christmas time. With the help of students and other community members, 300 plus families now receive yearly help with Christmas gifts at this special time of the year. These are just a few examples, along with Kim’s entire teaching career, that leave us here tonight saying thank you and a job well done!
The Bellevue High School FCCLA program, under Kim’s direction, has been very helpful to the Bellevue Redmen Athletic Department and Athletic Booster Club throughout the years. Tonight we also honor the FCCLA program, and all the kids throughout the many years of service for their time, efforts, and great job. Listed below is how the FCCLA program has assisted, and continues to assist the Bellevue Redmen Athletic Department and Athletic Booster Club.
- Operated the concession stand at all volleyball matches and girls basketball games for the past 30-35 years.
- Operated the concession stand at some boys’ basketball games, some wrestling dual matches, and all freshmen weekday games over the past 30-35 years.
- Worked approximately 25-30 plus home athletic events per year in the concession area of the sports mentioned above for the last 30-35 years.
- Assisted at our annual Hall of Fame Ceremony Dinner by serving and cleaning tables the last 7-8 years.
- Sold Football Programs at all home football games for the Bellevue Redmen Booster Club over the last 25 years plus.
Throughout the many years, the students in our FCCLA program have been outstanding in their efforts to be on time and serve our spectators at all our athletic events. Their willingness to assist our athletic department and booster club has not gone unnoticed. Tonight we say thank you many times over. It is our hope you continue to assist for years to come. Thank you for representing Bellevue High School and the Bellevue Community in a positive manner, and assisting the Bellevue Redmen Athletic Department.
