2017 Big Red Service Award
Sleepy Hollow Golf Course
Sleepy Hollow Golf Course
The “Big Red” Service Award is being presented for the 13th consecutive year after being established by the Hall of Fame Committee in 2005. The Award was established to honor a person, group, organization, or business that has gone beyond the call of duty to assist the Bellevue Redmen Athletic Department, Coaches, and/or the Bellevue Redmen Athletic Booster Club.
This year the Hall of Fame Committee is proud to announce and recognize Sleepy Hollow Golf Course and their owners Kit Hetrick and Pat Wiedle. Kit graduated from Bellevue H.S. in 1965. He was on the first golf team at Bellevue H.S. as a sophomore, and played from 1963-1965. Pat graduated from York School in 1967.
Pat’s parents, Howard and Rita Wiedle, owned the home and farm land located on the corner of State Route 101 and Sandusky County Road 288 back in 1960. It was at this time in their lives they decided to turn the farmland into a golf course. It did not take long for them to open up once that decision was made. In April of 1961 Sleepy Hollow Golf Course opened up play for local golfers, and golfers all around northwest Ohio. Duffy Bricker was the golf pro in 1961. He held that title for many, many years. A memorial tournament is held each spring in his honor. In 1978 Howard and Rita’s daughter Pat joined Duffy as the club’s golfing professionals. Pat has held the teaching professional position ever since.
In 1988 Howard and Rita sold the property and golf course to their daughter Pat Wiedle and Kit Hetrick. They have managed the property and golf course ever since, making it a golfing home to many local and area golfers. This year marks the 56th year Sleepy Hollow Golf Course has been open and they continue to offer their friendly and outstanding service to their golfing customers.
Many changes have taken place since 1988 under Kit & Pat’s leadership and management. New mowers and equipment have come a long way, and evolved over time. The irrigation system of the property went from only watering the tee boxes and greens, to also include all of the 18-hole fairways. The food menu in the pro shop has also increased over the many years, and now locals like to stop in for lunch or dinner, or enjoy some food during and after their round of golf.
In 1998 Sleepy Hollow Golf Course opened their arms to the Redmen Boys Golf Team. This current season marks the 20th year they have been home to the Redmen Boys Golf Team. In 2011 the Girls Golf Program started back up and Kit and Pat welcomed them onto the scene. This year will be the 7th year our girls program has called Sleepy Hollow home. During these past 20 years, Kit, Pat, and the Sleepy Hollow Management have been nothing but positive and junior golf friendly to our student athletes. They have always gone out of their way to make the kids & coaches feel welcome. They work with both Coach Jan TerVeen and Coach Walt Snyder, as well as both boys and girls teams from Margaretta High School. It gets busy during the season managing four teams and league play at the same time, but they make it work keeping our team’s best interest in mind. Each year the Boys Golf Team host the Home Savings Invitational with 13-14 teams. Sleepy Hollow treats all 65-8- kids and coaches great, and provides them all with food and a friendly atmosphere. They also host the teams and parents from the Bellevue and Margaretta Golf Teams for a cookout and play night at the end of the season. This is fun and friendly time as kids can play a round with their parents and enjoy each other’s company.
Lastly, Kit & Pat and Sleepy Hollow Golf Course hosted the annual Bellevue Athletic Booster Scramble for many years. They worked with the Boosters and always provided a organized, fun, and friendly event atmosphere. They opened their course to the needs of the Boosters. They assisted in the tournament set-up, organization, and provided an affordable cost fair to the Athletic Booster Club.
Sleepy Hollow Golf Course continues to provide great care to all its customers and to the Redmen and Lady Red Golf Teams. Congratulations Kit, Pat and Sleepy Hollow Golf Course as our “Big Red” Service Award recipients for 2017. We look forward to many years to come.
