A natural born leader
both on and off the field, Joe Green earned a total of eight
letters for the Red and White of Bellevue Senior High
School, coming from a tradition-rich sports family and
background. Joe graduated in 1983.
Joe earned two letters
in basketball, a two-year starter and letter winner as a
junior and senior. In both of those years he was named Best
Defensive Player for the Redmen, was captain his senior
year, and helped to lead the team to the Northern Ohio
League title during his senior season in 1982-83.
In baseball, Joe
earned three letters, playing three years as catcher for the
Redmen. He was named Honorable Mention All Northern Ohio
League his junior season and was captain of the squad during
his senior campaign. That year, the team went 15-5 overall
and won the Sectional Title. Joe was named to the First Team
All Northern Ohio League that season, hit .417 his senior
season and ended his career by hitting over .400.
But it was in the
sport of football where Joe really excelled, earning three
letters and starting 21 consecutive games as quarterback.
During those 21 games, Joe led the team to a 20-1 record.
During Joe’s junior
year in 1981, the team won the Northern Ohio League title
and became the first team in school history to make the
playoffs.
During his senior
season, Joe led the team to a 10-0 record and the Northern
Ohio League championship. That team was the first in school
history to go 10-0. The squad also hosted the first-ever
playoff game at BAF Stadium in Bellevue.
During his senior
year, Joe passed for 1,136 yards and eight touchdowns while
running for 304 yards and seven TD’s. He was team MVP in
1982, captain, First Team All League quarterback, Second
Team All Northwest District, Honorable Mention All-Ohio, and
was inducted into the National Football Foundation’s Hall of
Fame for leadership, scholarship and athletics. Joe also
graduated in the Top 10 of his class and was inducted into
the Alfred Ross Chapter of the National Honor Society.
Joe then attended the
U.S. Military Academy at West Point on a football
scholarship, eventually transferring to the University of
Toledo where he made the football squad as a walk-on.
Joe and his wife,
Lori, reside in Bellevue. They are parents of two daughters,
Emily and Olivia. Joe is a professor of psychology at The
Ohio State University Department of Psychology. |
