The late Ed Haynes, who
graduated from Bellevue High School in 1988, was the
youngest in a family of tremendously-gifted athletes. Ed’s
brother and sister, Duke and Sheryl, are already members of
the Bellevue Athletic Hall of Fame.
Ed earned seven
varsity letters as one of the best all-around male athletes
of the modern era, including three in football, three in
track and field, and one in baseball.
Ed played just one
season of varsity baseball in 1988 after an outstanding
track and field career. He played center field and set the
school stolen base record with 20 steals in 21 attempts. He
helped lead the team to the sectional title and was
Honorable Mention All-Northern Ohio League.
In track and field, Ed
scored 169 ¼ points, set the school record in the 400
meters, and was a state qualifier in the 400 and in the 1600
meter relay – all during his sophomore year.
The following season,
in 1987, he again set the school record in the 400 (49.6
seconds), was part of the school-record setting 1600-meter
relay team (3:27.6), participated in four regional events
(110, 200, 400, 1600 relay), and placed fifth at the state
meet in the 400 dash.
Ed had a stellar
football career for the red and white, rushing for 466 yards
and racking up 259 yards receiving as a sophomore in 1985,
scoring seven touchdowns along the way.
During the 1987
campaign, Ed was a member of the 8-4 overall Redmen team
that won the first-ever playoff game in school history, a
24-21 win over Garfield Heights Trinity.
During that season, Ed
gained 1,383 yards for a 5.2 yards per carry average, and
scored 12 touchdowns. He had over 2,000 all purpose yards
and scored 80 total points. He was First Team All-Northern
Ohio League as a running back, was Honorable Mention
All-Ohio, was the team’s MVP, and participated in the
North-South All Star Football Game. |
