Although
he is not a native of Bellevue, Sam Schubert has been
claimed as a native son for his many accomplishments as a
coach and athletic director at Bellevue Senior High School.
Schubert moved to Bellevue in 1964 after one year of
teaching experience in the Anthony Wayne School District. At
that time, he was asked by his good friend and former
teammate, Duane Warns, to teach in Bellevue and take over as
junior varsity basketball coach. The decision to come to
Bellevue would begin a 32-year relationship between Schubert
and his adopted home of Bellevue.
His work ethic and dedication to the athletic program earned
Schubert much respect from students, coaches, and peers
throughout the area and the Northern Ohio League.
His first teaching assignment was ninth grade science at
Bellevue Junior High School. He also served many years as a
junior high counselor and was also the junior high athletic
director for a short time. He then moved over to the senior
high school where he served as athletic director for 14
years full-time until his retirement, and another two years
part-time after his retirement.
During his career as athletic director, Schubert served as
tournament manager for many football playoff games, baseball
tournament games, track invitationals, and wrestling
invitationals. He formulated an athletic handbook for all
Bellevue head coaches, and worked with and assisted with
many Athletic Booster Club projects. Schubert assisted or
directed many large-scale projects, including:
- The
Lowell Shaffer Memorial Track
-
Concession building at BAF Stadium
- Weight
roomlwrestling room addition to BHS
- Dugout
construction at Peters Park and BHS fields
- Trophy
case construction at BHS
- Football
visitor seating
- Tennis
court construction and maintenance
During
Schubert’s coaching career, he was co-varsity track coach
for six years from 1965-70; was junior varsity basketball
coach for 16 years from 1965-90 under head coaches Duane
Warns, Mark Shine, and Lyle Falknor; and was varsity boys
basketball coach for four years from 1975-78. His varsity
coaching record was 44-33. His teams were sectional
champions in both 1976 and 1978, and he was named District
VI Basketball Coach of the Year in 1976.
On May 1, 2001, Schubert was honored as a “Friend of
Bellevue Schools” for his contributions and dedication to
the school system. |
